Heroes To Hometowns

The American Legion Post 36 located in Windsor Locks is the sponsor of a program called Heroes to Hometown. This program is designed to help disabled service personnel returning home to their community the opportunity to reestablish their lives in spite of their injuries and try to ensure a smooth transition back into civilian life.

Army Sergeant Barry Albert of Suffield Street lost his leg (above the knee) from an IED explosion in Iraq and is currently undergoing rehab at a stateside medical facility and is scheduled to come home in the middle of September for a short visit. He will then go back to the rehab center and hopefully return home before Thanksgiving. He is currently being fitted for a prosthetic, but is still using a wheelchair to get around.

In the meantime a "Heroes to Hometown" fund has been set up at Windsor Locks Federal Credit Union to accept donations. Businesses and Organizations are being solicited to donate money, services or help with any assistance they may be willing to donate. The Carpenters Union Local 43 and Local 24 have pledged their services with building a ramp and widening doorways in the home. Each newspaper has done a story on this vet's return and the scope of the fundraising/work that needs to be done to help his transition back home.
